Was it Dorothy Parker who said: “Don’t go to bed mad, stay up and fight?” Well, I feel a little verbal brawl is in order: I visited—well actually on the way home from the hardware store--I stumbled upon One-mile Gallery. Now please understand and don’t get me wrong, I do not want them to adhere to the ever so special core curriculum that’s been sweeping the nation. Really the spirit was there (at least until the wine ran out) we could have been in Telluride or Austin or San Fran. People don’t realize just how nice the weather in New York can be it’s just so gosh darned unpredictable . . . anyway many young people attended the opening of (shall we say) a show that dared to lean on the boring side of daring, therefore, the artistic highlight for yours truly was (drum-roll,) the envelope please: The Sphinx Moth smashing its body against the whitewashed walls of the gallery! In cases like this it certainly helps to be an entomologist, I’m sure you have seen my show: The Moth Whisperer. Sadly the moth had gone mad I’m not sure what the cause was but the result was clear: mad as a Hatter I freed him in the spirit of Elsa the lioness, though there’s no doubt the Sphinx would be bat food by morning. Why I wondered? How could this happen? A perfectly fit moth, dragged down in midlife, what could it have been? I’d like to think it was that they ran out of beverages too early. Unfortunately I think it was the art. His last words were either: “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!” or “Thank God I’m not an artist what a bunch of AHs.” continuing briefly, “remember me to the host who appears to be working too hard to be a direct conspirator in this malarkey,” and then the wee bairn dashed away into the darkness at full sphinx.
